Sully

We rescued Sully (Benny) in August of 2014. It was a match right away. Sully fit right into our family and was “that dog”. He loved everyone and was loved by everyone. They say you get that one dog in your life that you can never forget and Sully was the one. From the beginning he was the most laid back and chill dog I had met and you wouldn’t have known it based on his backstory. He was found in the woods in Kentucky and brought to CILRA from a kill shelter. The only thing he never liked was storms, loud noises and fireworks. In May 2024, Sully was diagnosed as a diabetic. He took it just like he took everything else in life. Laid back and chill. He was so good at letting me take his blood sugar before breakfast and dinner and then giving him his insulin. The only time he minded was if we didn’t get his blood sugar on the first or second time. I mean who would! He was always so food motivated, he couldn’t understand why the Lab food testing went away but we went to structured snacks he was always eating so for him, it was a win! We had to say goodbye so much earlier than we wanted or were ready for. In March of 2025, our vet found a tumor that we knew wasn’t good. We decided to let Sully live out the rest of his life fully and happy. We didn’t want to put him through a surgery to find out what we already knew. We didn’t think a month later we would be saying goodbye to our heart dog. We made the decision Easter weekend to say goodbye. We host Easter for our family so it was an extra special Easter because all of Sully’s favorite people were able to be with him and give him all the lovin’s he deserved along with food that he never got! We said screw the blood sugar! We had Lap of Love come to our house on Monday April 22nd to help us cross Sully over the bridge. Sully will always be one of those dogs that we never forget.
