Oliver – Adoption Pending

Adoption Pending

The Puppy Phase Is Over—The Best Part Starts Here

If you’ve been looking for a Labrador who has already mastered the art of being a great family dog, Oliver would like to introduce himself.

This handsome 8-9-year-old black Lab weighs about 55 pounds and is everything people love about the breed—friendly, loyal, affectionate, and happiest when he’s spending time with his people. Freshly neutered and heartworm negative, Oliver is ready to find a family of his own.

Oliver is the kind of dog who settles seamlessly into daily life. He’s fully house-trained, crate-trained, and has excellent house manners. In fact, he doesn’t even need to be crated. He’s not a chewer, doesn’t get into things that don’t belong to him, and can be trusted to behave when left alone. His foster family has left him loose in the house for several hours without a single issue.

What Oliver loves most is simply being near his people. Whether you’re watching TV, working around the house, taking a walk, or heading out for a drive, he’ll happily be your shadow. He forms strong bonds with his family and prefers not to miss out on anything you’re doing. If you leave the room, he may offer a little commentary to let you know he’d rather come along. Fortunately, this behavior continues to improve as he gains confidence and settles into his routine.

Oliver enjoys two 45-minute walks each day and would love a family that enjoys getting outside with him. Those daily walks are helping him stay active on his weight-loss journey, and he tackles them with enthusiasm. He’s learning to walk nicely on leash and is always excited to spend time exploring with his people. He also loves car rides and boat rides and is an exceptionally polite passenger no matter where the adventure leads.

This sweet boy is smart, eager to please, and knows commands such as “sit” and “come.” He’s learning “off” and responds well to gentle guidance. He takes treats softly, allows handling for baths, brushing, ear cleaning, and nail trims, and willingly gives up toys, treats, or anything else he may have picked up.

Oliver is wonderful with children and gets along beautifully with other dogs. He has a gentle, easygoing personality and has never shown signs of aggression. Whether he joins a home as an only dog or becomes part of a multi-dog family, he has the temperament to fit right in. His previous owner reported that he was good with cats, although that has not been tested in foster care.

One of Oliver’s best qualities is how closely he stays connected to his people. He has excellent recall and has spent time off leash in his foster family’s yard without attempting to leave. He simply doesn’t have much interest in being far from the people he loves. Because of this, a fenced yard is not necessarily required for the right family.

Like many dogs, Oliver is still working through a few habits from his past life. He sometimes barks when he sees people approaching or bicycles passing by. Considering that watching the world go by was once his favorite pastime, he’s already made tremendous progress and continues to improve every day.

Oliver has a wonderful balance of calm and playful. He enjoys a good game of fetch, loves attention, and occasionally stands on his back legs for a gentle greeting when he’s excited to see you. Most of the time, though, he’s content to relax nearby, soaking up affection and enjoying the company of his family.

Oliver is looking for a home where he can be someone’s loyal companion—a family that is home often, enjoys daily walks, and will continue supporting his healthy lifestyle as he works toward his ideal weight. In return, he’ll reward you with unwavering loyalty, plenty of affection, and a constant desire to be by your side.

If you’re searching for a sweet, steady, affectionate Labrador with a heart full of love, Oliver may be exactly the dog you’ve been waiting for. He is currently being fostered in the northern Chicago suburbs.

Adopting a Lab can be a wonderful experience. Your new dog will need lots of love, adequate exercise and attention. Keep in mind that dog ownership may include additional costs for training, grooming, and health care beyond annual vaccines and monthly preventatives. It’s a lifetime commitment!
