Franklin

Meet Franklin! He’s an 8 month old chocolate “field-type” Lab who came into foster care at the age of 8 weeks when his original family discovered that such a young pup was not a good fit for their small children.

Franklin is a healthy, happy, loving and exceptionally smart boy. He has been neutered, fully vetted currently weighs 55 pounds and will likely grow to be in the 70 pound range. He is house-trained, crate- trained and LOVES people, dogs and cats! However, he has not yet learned that cats aren’t littermates and do not appreciate his frequent invitations to romp and play. Franklin rides very well in a car; both crated and in the seat, but prefers a crate where he has room to stretch out and relax. Franklin happily shares his food, toys, territory and his family – not a jealous bone in his body! Nor is he fearful of storms, vacuum cleaners, strange people, environments, or other dogs. And he is now preparing to graduate the third level of obedience training where he continues to practice his basic commands and entry level agility.

Franklin is a typical adolescent Labrador Retriever, and as such has a good amount of energy that requires ongoing training to harness and direct in healthy and productive ways. He will require further and consistent leash training to deter pulling and to work on his “meet and greet” etiquette. He also needs a safe, fenced area to romp and play and express his natural Labbyness. Franklin is comfortable in his crate, will go there whenever told “Go to your Hopper”, and crates well overnight. However, he prefers and is used to being with his family during the day, so is not suited for families who are gone for extended periods of time. Further, since being fostered it has become apparent that Franklin will thrive best in a family that has at least one other dog, as he clearly longs for a compatible K-9 playmate.

Franklin does not counter surf, but has just discovered the endless wonders of a toilet and will sort your laundry if given the opportunity (and hide your socks). He also loves to play fetch and is an ace fielder at catching both the ball and Frisbee. His favorite hobbies are: walks through the woods, playing in the creek, chasing butterflies, sampling wild edibles (including the flower garden), woodworking with sticks, car rides, licking peanut butter out of a Kong toy and “going to class”.

For a family that has a heart for Labs and time to devote to ongoing training throughout his adolescence, Franklin will make a beautiful, loving and precious addition to their “pack”. He is located in Danville, Indiana directly west of Indianapolis.

Adopting a Lab can be a wonderful experience. Your new dog will need lots of love, adequate exercise and attention. Keep in mind that dog ownership may include additional costs for training, grooming, and health care beyond annual vaccines and monthly preventatives. It’s a lifetime commitment!
